Learning a choreographed routine can be tough if you’ve never danced before. It’s a whole world of counting to eight over and over!
Each motion happens on a specific count or half-count (the "and" between numbers). Those counts have to match the beat of the music. Sometimes hearing the beat is tricky, but with practice, you will learn how to find it.
Getting Started: "5, 6, 7, 8"
You have probably heard, “5, 6, 7, 8!” This is the signal for everyone to start at the same time. A routine can include:
Cheer motions (like high-Vs or T's)
Footwork
Kicks
Jumps
Tips for Memorizing
To help your brain learn the moves, count out loud while you practice. Saying the numbers while moving helps your body remember what comes next.
I also suggest practicing one 8-count at a time. Do not move on to the next section until you have the first one down. It is much easier to memorize a small group of motions than a long routine all at once!
Quick Vocabulary Guide:
Choreography: A planned series of moves.
In Sync: Moving at exactly the same time as the music or other people.
Verbal Cues: Words or numbers you say out loud to help you remember.
